Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the east and south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica, which translates literally as "Rich Coast", constitutionally abolished its army permanently in 1949. It is the only Latin American country included in the list of the world’s 22 older democracies. Costa Rica has consistently been among the top Latin American countries in terms of the Human Development Index, and ranked 54th in the world in 2007. The country is ranked 3rd in the world, and 1st among the Americas, in terms of the 2010 Environmental Performance Index. In 2007 the Costa Rican government announced plans for Costa Rica to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021. According to the New Economics Foundation, Costa Rica ranks first in the Happy Planet Index and is the "greenest" country in the world.

Costa Rica

We have divided the country in 8 areas based on different attractions that define each one offering a different experience for every visitor:

    map
  1. The Central Valley holds most of the population of the country as well as the capital city, San Jose.
  2. Arenal Volcano & Northern Plains offer the Volcano as the main attraction and a lot of different activities targeting the adventurous traveler.
  3. The Northern Highlands and Monteverde, experience the cloud forest and breath-taking views of the lowlands from this area.
  4. The South Pacific (Osa Peninsula & Corcovado) the most pristine area of the country, targeted to the real naturalist, the area is only accessible by local flights and holds the best example of Tropical Rain Forest.
  5. The Mid Pacific area (Manuel Antonio & Jaco) one of the top destinations of the country offers a mix of rain forest and beach, you will have a lot of activities to keep you busy in the area.
  6. The North Pacific (Guanacaste), the main attraction here consists of long sunny beaches and major resorts; the area holds some of the last tropical dry forests remaining on the planet.
  7. North Caribbean (Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado) is definitely different from your idea of the Caribbean, this area showcases a net of canals that flow into the ocean, known as the little Costa Rican Amazons. This is an ideal place for nature observation, and offers fantastic options for fishing.
  8. The South Caribbean (Cahuita and Puerto Viejo) offers a very unique blend of nature and culture, intense wilderness and modern amenities that make a vacation memorable.
